Death and Resurrection No.18 (8/10/2024)

Scripture: Pro 3:14-15, Rev 3:17-18, etc.

You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see (Rev 3:17-18).

This salve is the salve of repentance, as the subsequent words indicate. The Laodicean Christians had put their trust in their wealth and considered themselves wise and superior, but Jesus saw them in the exact opposite way.

Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me (vv. 19-20).

To repent, one must first realize one’s mistakes, humbly admit them, and earnestly desire to change. The Laodicean Christians first needed to realize their pride, feel ashamed, and begin to desire change. Only then could God purify them.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
