Sermon Summary

"For His Glory" No.19
“God’s Hidden Glory” C
Scriptures: Exod ch. 33, Gen ch. 32

And the LORD said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.” Then Moses said, “Now show me your glory (Exod 33:17- 18).”
The literal translation of “show me” is “let me see.” The verb “to see” conveys a direct and strong sense, especially when used for God’s glory. Seeing something with your eyes gives you direct knowledge and is not the same as hearing about it from someone else.

Moses had been talking with the Lord face to face, but he still sensed the indirectness in his communication with him. He first heard the Lord’s voice calling him at the burning bush.
When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am (hinneni).” God said, “Do not come any closer. Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground (3:4-5).”
You can sense the indirectness in how Moses approached the Lord. The reason was that the ground was holy, but Moses was not. When the Lord came down to the mountain with thunder, lightning, and trumpet blast, Moses went up to speak with the Lord while the Israelites remained at the foot of the mountain.
Mount Sinai was covered with smoke, because the LORD descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, the whole mountain trembled violently, and the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder. Then Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him (lit. God answered in voice) (19:18-19).
