Death and Resurrection No. 1 (3/16/2024)

Scripture: Luke 24:13-35, Isa 60:1-3, etc.

How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory (Luke 24:25-26)?

Jesus said these words to the two disciples on their way back to Emmaus, their hometown, after the Passover, during which he had been crucified. What he meant by “how foolish you are” was their foolishness of not believing that Christ had “to suffer these things and then enter his glory.”

And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself (v. 27).

The one who explained to them was Christ himself. Yet they did not know it was him! How foolish and blind they were!

As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going farther. But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them (vv. 28-29).

Seeing Jesus as a mere visitor, they strongly urged him to stay with them to help him with hospitality. They did not know that the hospitality they offered to him with bread was about to change their lives.

When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight (v. 30).

They must have been puzzled at how this visitor “took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and began to give it to them.” In Jesus’ mind, this bread was the living bread that came down from heaven. The bread was, in fact, the word he explained to them, “beginning with Moses and all the
Prophets,” and “what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.” The moment they received the bread from him, their foolish veil of unbelief was removed from their eyes, and they began to see him!
