Theme:Fan into Flame!

For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline (2 Tim 1:6-7).

Paul wrote these words to Timothy during his second imprisonment in Rome, as he realized his life was drawing to a close. Similarly, Jesus spoke to His disciples after His resurrection, before His ascension to heaven:

I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high (Luke 24:49).

The phrase “until you have been clothed with power “ implies that, even though the disciples had witnessed Jesus’ death and resurrection, they had not yet received this “power.”

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8).

Just as mass-energy exists in the physical world, expressed by the equation E = mc2, a tangible, substantive power exists in the spiritual realm. If you mistake this power for something belonging only to abstract knowledge or heightened emotion, you will fail to receive it and live a life without radiance, marked by defeat in earthly circumstances.

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes (Eph 6:10-11).

“Finally” suggests that having heard and understood the truth, we are now to be “strong (strengthened) in the Lord and in his mighty power.” It is like lighting the firewood placed in the hearth—setting it ablaze. Even if you attend a church service and hear the Word of God—feeling truly blessed in the process—unless what you have heard is ignited and fanned into a flame, no substantive “power” will be at work in your life. The Bible teaches that this is precisely why believers need to gather in one place. When believers—each carrying their own firewood—come together, the pile of fuel grows, making it far easier for the fire of the Holy Spirit to catch and blaze.

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting (Acts 2:1-2).

Furthermore, even if you were once kindled and caught fire, the flame will eventually lose its heat and die out. Even Timothy, who had experienced the fire many times before, needed to add fresh fuel and “fan into flame (rekindle)” again. So whether you were once on fire but are now merely smoldering, or have never truly caught fire, join us as we gather, add fresh fuel, and stir one another’s fires into a big blaze.
