DESCRIPTION:Jun Asai Piano Concert 2024\nJuly 27 (Saturday) \, 2:00PM\nAt the Colburn School (LA downtown) \nThis year’s concert showcases two piano sonatas written at vastly different points of development within their respective composers’ lifetimes. The first\, Beethoven’s op. 111\, is the last sonata of 32 he wrote for solo piano\, completed a mere five years before his death. The second sonata is Chopin’s No. 2\, which was his first mature sonata written while still in his twenties. The final piece on the program is the Agosti transcription of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. Rarely performed on piano\, it is drawn from the first ballet Stravinsky wrote for Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes. \nProgram:\nBeethoven      Piano Sonata No. 32 Op. 111\nChopin         Piano Sonata No. 2\, Op. 35\nStravinsky     The Firebird Suite (arr. Agosti) \nProfile :\nJun Asai has performed with orchestras around the world\, including the L.A. Philharmonic\, Glendale Philharmonic\, Fort Worth Symphony\, Utah Symphony\, Nagoya Philharmonic\, and Shanghai Philharmonic. Prizewinner at various competitions—L.A. Phil’s Kaper Awards\, the National Chopin Competition\, Shanghai Int’l Competition\, Joanna Hodges Int’l Competition\, Bachauer Int’l Competition\, New Orleans Int’l Competition\, Città di Cantù Int’l Piano Competition\, among others. Her teachers include Eduardo Delgado\, Daniel Pollack\, Oxana Yablonskaya\, and Yoheved Kaplinsky. She has also worked with Yong Hi Moon\, John O’Conor\, Arie Vardi\, Mikhail Voskressensky\, and Nelita True. She gave her debut recital at Carnegie’s Weill Hall in 2002\, appeared four times on the TV program “Musical Encounter\,” and played the role of a piano prodigy in “Sneakers” with Robert Redford. She was born in Tulsa\, Oklahoma\, and grew up locally in Pasadena\, where she studied at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music and later at the Colburn School of Music. She entered the undergraduate program at Juilliard School at age 15 and went on to attain a master’s degree. Toru Asai \nDavar Church holds bible seminar camps every year in August and December. Many people participate not only from California\, but also from all over the U.S.\, Japan\, and Asia. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city\, five days of concentrated Bible study provides a good opportunity to reflect on oneself and change one’s way of life. \nSummer Bible Seminar 2024  “Hallelujah! Amen! Ho!” will be held on 7/28 (Sun) – 8/2 (Fri) at Davar Church. Now Accepting Applications! \nClap your hands\, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. How awesome is the LORD Most High\, the great King over all the earth (Ps 47:1-2)! \nThe Bible urges and commands all humans\, all creatures\, and\, of course\, the angels who live in the spiritual world to rejoice and praise God. Why? \nShout for joy to the LORD\, all the earth\, burst into jubilant song with music (98:4). \nNotice how the words like “shout” and “joy” are used in these Scriptures. Apparently\, there’s a difference between just saying “Hallelujah” and shouting “Hallelujah!” joyfully. \nShout for joy to the LORD\, all the earth. Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs (100:1-2). \nWhy does the Bible encourage us to rejoice\, shout\, and praise the Lord? Speaking of rejoicing\, we also find the following Scripture: \nI rejoice at your word like one who finds great spoil (Ps 119:162 ESV) \nWhen we hear the Word and realize it is true\, we say\, “Amen!” This psalm figuratively expresses such joy in the Word as finding a great spoil. Admittedly\, understanding\, receiving\, and believing God’s word is closely related to joy. Can you explain why? At one time\, the Lord showed Jeremiah an almond branch and said: \nYou have seen correctly\, for I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled (Jer 1:12). \nHo! Blessed are those who believe that what Almighty God said will be fulfilled!
